Dog Summer Safety Tips - 2023

As the temperature rises, it's important to remember that dogs are susceptible to heatstroke and other summer-related health problems. Dogs can't sweat like humans do, so they have to rely on panting to cool down. This means that they are more vulnerable to overheating and dehydration, especially in the hot summer months. Here are some tips to keep your furry friend safe and healthy during the summer.

  1. Keep your dog hydrated Make sure that your dog has access to plenty of clean drinking water, both indoors and outdoors. If you're going for a walk or a hike, bring a water bottle and a portable bowl to keep your dog hydrated.

  2. Avoid walking during the hottest parts of the day Dogs are more likely to overheat during the middle of the day, so it's best to avoid taking them for walks during this time. Instead, go for walks early in the morning or later in the evening when the temperature is cooler.

  3. Never leave your dog in a parked car Even if you crack the windows, leaving your dog in a parked car can be deadly. The temperature inside a parked car can rise quickly, even with the windows cracked, and can cause heatstroke or even death. If you need to leave your dog in the car, make sure that the air conditioning is on and that someone is checking on them regularly.

  4. Provide shade and cool spaces Make sure that your dog has access to plenty of shade and cool spaces to rest during the day. If your dog spends time outside, consider providing a shaded area with a doghouse or umbrella.

  5. Watch for signs of overheating If your dog is panting excessively, has a rapid heartbeat, or seems disoriented or lethargic, they may be overheating. Move them to a cooler area and provide them with water. If their symptoms don't improve, take them to the vet immediately.

  6. Consider a visit to the groomer to get your dogs coat in condition to handle the heat. WE DO NOT suggest SHAVING DOWN any dog during the summer! Having spent 3 + decades in the grooming industry, this common practice has lead to more dogs having major skin issues due to lack of protection from the sun. Even a dog such as a Husky or Sheppard, needs those coats to protect them. Simply have your dogs coat blown out and us a service such as the FURminator or other like services, to get rid of dead coat thats trapped in your dogs coat not allowing it to get proper air circulation around the skin. If you are getting a “ summer cut “ be sure the coat is cut leaving enough length to allow the skin to be protected.

  7. Protect your dog from the sun Dogs can get sunburned, especially on their nose and ears. Consider applying pet-safe sunscreen to your dog's exposed skin to protect them from the sun's harmful rays.

By following these tips, you can help keep your furry friend safe and healthy during the hot summer months. Remember, if you're ever unsure about your dog's health, don't hesitate to contact your veterinarian for advice.
